Launch Control

For many years, scientists would be in concrete bunkers to launch the rocket. It's hard to see but there are periscopes at the top to see out instead of windows. They were afraid that windows might be destroyed if the rocket exploded, which did occasionally happen such as when the US tried to launch its first satellite. This is a real bunker and was pretty close to the pad, because scientists could not guarantee the reliability of an electrical signal from a great distance.
